what to do in katikati
Make the most of your time in this charming, sunny town.
We’ve put together an extensive list of some the must-see attractions and activities in and around Katikati. Whether you’re an art enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply looking for a relaxing getaway, Katikati has something special for everyone.
Explore the Katikati Murals
Stroll through town and enjoy over 60 vibrant murals that depict Katikati’s history, local culture, and natural beauty. It’s like an outdoor art gallery celebrating the town’s unique heritage.
Run by Katikati Open Air Art, the idea for Katikati Murals began in 1989 after a public meeting about ways to promote the town. At the time, Katikati was going through a challenging period and needed a boost.
The driving force behind the project was a dedicated group of volunteers inspired by the success of Chemainus, a small town on Vancouver Island in Canada, which had faced similar struggles. Local art teacher June Carlton pioneered the effort, and today, Katikati boasts over 60 outdoor murals and artworks. The town also hosts the biennial NZ Mural Contest & Arts Festival, which draws artists and visitors from across New Zealand and beyond. This event celebrates public art and encourages both local and international artists to contribute to Katikati’s evolving story through new murals and sculptures. Today, Katikati’s murals have transformed the town into a vibrant cultural destination, making it a must-visit spot for art lovers and anyone interested in New Zealand’s rich history and community spirit.
Find out more about Katikati murals and access the murals map on the Katikati Open Air Art website.
Visit the Katikati Bird Gardens
Wander through the enchanting Katikati Bird Gardens, a peaceful sanctuary spread over ten acres of lush gardens, ponds, and native bush. Home to a wide variety of bird species, the gardens offer a unique opportunity to observe ducks, swans, peacocks, and other native and exotic birds in a tranquil, natural setting.
Established over 40 years ago, the gardens have become a beloved retreat for locals and visitors alike, offering winding paths and scenic views of the Kaimai Ranges. Visitors can enjoy feeding the birds, taking leisurely walks, or simply relaxing in the beautiful surroundings. The gardens also feature a charming café with views over the wetlands, perfect for a relaxing break after exploring.
Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher or just looking to unwind in nature, Katikati Bird Gardens offers a rejuvenating escape that celebrates both the region’s natural beauty and its vibrant wildlife.
Dine at Forta Leza
“Proudly kitsch” is a fitting description for Forta Leza, where you’ll find a delicious menu brimming with options!
Housed in a dilapidated former dairy factory that’s over 120 years old, dining here feels like stepping into a time warp. The atmosphere evokes images of Diagon Alley or a medieval alehouse, making it a truly unique experience.
Forta Leza is not just about the food (which I might add, is delicious); it’s an adventure in itself! We highly recommend a visit, especially if you appreciate quirky dining spots.
Don’t miss the small museum on-site, featuring a collection of old dolls, dresses, and various collectables that add to the charm.
It’s rare to find a place like this in New Zealand, so it’s worth a visit—even if you’re not particularly into the decor, the food is fantastic!
